Petri K. Leppänen from team Visillatalot won opening race
Finnish road biking season was started on weekend in Turku. On Saturday was driven first race of maantiecup in memory of Simo Klimscheffskij in cold and wet conditions at Hirvensalo.
Despite the conditions, it was speedy race where were drivers in addition to Finnish drivers, from Estonia and Latvia. Breakaways were seen during whole race but critical breakaway happened five laps before finish when experienced Petri K. Leppänen from team Visillatalot-Riofrio Caviar-Continental broke away. Leppänen saw his moment when main crowd was tired catching up previous breakaways. He gained quickly over half minute difference to main bunch and they didn’t have any more strength to catch up with Leppänen. Finally Leppänen won with six second difference. Second place won Marek Salermo from team Velocitorin. Third was Kristofers Räcenäjs from Alpha Baltic team.
